Viktor Hertz, a freelance Graphic Designer from Sweden, finally did it – he turned well known logos into “Honest Logos”.

“An idea for a series with honest logos, revealing the actual content of the company, what they really should be called. Some are cheap, some might be a bit funny, some will maybe be brilliant. I don’t know.” says the artist.

Artist Fabian Gaete Maureira's "fingerscapes" are simply incredible.
The Chilean artist paints the detailed landscape portraits of trees, mountains and waterfalls with just the tips of his fingers in less than three minutes in this amazing YouTube video first found on reddit.
According to TB5Design, Maureira uses glass, not canvas to create his breathtaking masterpieces.
Maureira isn't alone in using the unusual, brushless painting method.
Artist Seikou Yamaoka also uses his fingers to create beautiful iPod Touch paintings during his train commute.

Hosted by ICN gallery, japanese contemporary artist Riusuke Fukahori makes his London debut with
'goldfish salvation', a collection of paintings and sculptures revolving around the often colourful freshwater fish.
What looks to be an actual goldfish frozen in time is a careful construction of casting resin which has been layered with acrylic paint. section by section, fukahori builds up the fish with fleeting brushwork,
resulting in an effect that resembles motion blur underneath water.
Cast in a variety of vessels - from large sushi basins to the hollow insides of black bamboo - the 'living sculptures' are a delicate balance between painting and sculpture. the artist's meticulous attention to detail coupled with the tedious nature of the style creates highly dynamic three-dimensional pieces that capture the delicacy and animated life of the fish.

How did you get started in your design and illustration career?

I got a job as a junior designer and illustrator at a newspaper company in the early 90′s. I started hand drawing images and scanning them in, and then in my spare time taught myself how to use Adobe Illustrator 3, which was much different than the version we have today. I loved the clean result of vector art and I’ve tried to evolve my style ever since.

Did you get an education? How did you discovered this talent?

Yes, I did a design course but there were no computers, it was all old school markers. Practice I guess, would get into work early, and stay late and over time. I just tried to get better at how I drew stuff.

Do you draw on paper first and then transfer them to computer or use only tablet?

I draw everything on screen – I draw a quick rough first, then convert that drawing to guides before drawing my final illustration over the top.
I do have a tablet, but I draw most of my designs just with a mouse. I learned to draw in Illustrator with a mouse, and then started using a tablet few years later, so I don’t mind either way.

Can you describe the design process? How do you start and end?

It’s fairly simple really – I get an idea when I’m doing something else, and then I usually forget it. Then if I ever remember it again, I just sit down and draw it. I’m fairly impatient so I like to try to finish it ASAP, then I’ll leave it for a day or two, and revisit it. Then I’ll do any refining and if it’s for my tees it usually goes straight here: site.glennz

Which software are your favorites? Which software and which tool do you like most?

I love Illustrator! and pretty much just use the Pen Tool. I like the refinement you can get with the bezier curves.

What are your future plans? For example, will we see toy versions of your illustrations? Can you share some of these plans with us?

I really have no idea – its a constant evolution and I’m lucky to be teamed up with some guys that are always keen to try something new.
So yes, hopefully there will be all sorts of product additions in the future.

Your illustrations have a different iconic style. Most of your works have humorous and rational aspects. What is the reason for this kind of drawing?

I think alot of that style was influenced by the jobs I had to do when I first started using Illustrator. Part of my job was to create editorial graphics and graphs. I really like the clean simplicity of info graphics and I think that has followed through into my style today. I often draw something and then when I see it a couple of days later I’ll remove stuff to simplify as much as possible – try to make it clear and easy to get.

All your works are illustrations. Do you have other type of works too, for instance web design, info graphics, etc? Or do you prefer working only on illustrations? What kind of works would you do, if illustration did not exist?

Yes I’m a packaging and corporate identity designer, but I enjoy the illustration side of things more. If there wasn’t illustration, I’d like to be an industrial designer – create products or furniture, something like that.

Which artists inspired you? Why? What did you see in them? Which websites do you visit for inspiration? Which movies affected you most?

I don’t really have any favorite artists, there are so many talented people around, even just on a site like Threadless – there is some mind blowing talent and diverse work on there. Websites I look at often would be: notcot, Behance, ffffound, Core77. I’m not sure if any movies have effected me too much, but I do like to call upon well known pop culture to put my spin on it.

Giuseppe Mastromatteo’s portraits bring poetic Surrealism back to life. While standing in line to enter a museum in Holland, Kobi noticed a bird flying. This sight inspired him to incorporate the fascinating shapes and colors of bird into shoe design. The research in this area proved so fruitful that Kobi was reluctant to choose only one bird, and decided to make a series of 3 designs. The basic shape of the bird, which shows the upper as a body/wings and the heel as a beak, can be implemented to numerous birds, each with her own “styling”.
The Mallard duck, Toucan and Swan were chosen due to their unique color combinations and typical, recognizable shapes.

Vivienne Westwood is fashion's chief architect of revolt. She was once queen of punk and is no stranger to the forms of sabotage that can pave the way for the next upheaval in style or taste. Her clothes are revolutionary and controversial. Her designs include intentionally twisted seams, intentionally badly cut clothes, designs intended to shock, deliberate contradictions of colour. She ignores conventional fashion directions and goes her own way. She is queen of the original: bustiers, mens kilts, cone-shaped bras as day wear; classical paintings on underwear; the mini crinoline, fake fur trains, woolly royal crowns and so on. Surprisingly, other well-known designers have lavished praise on Vivienne. Rei Kawakubo, the famous Japanese designer says "I think Vivienne's means of expression is profound. Her way of smashing tradition to create something totally new, is wonderful".

Anastassia Elias

Paris based artist Anastassia Elias typically works in the mediums of painting and illustration, but she recently undertook a new project of silhouettes encased inside toilet paper rolls. The on-going series consists of toilet paper tubes that have been filled with layers of cut paper silhouettes that come to life with the addition of a simple light. Elias cuts the paper shapes out using a paper very close to the toilet roll and uses tweezers to manipulate the shapes inside. Each piece takes a few hours to complete because of the intricate cutting and the small scale of the project.

Embroidery is pretty hot right now, so who better to show off this current trend than Lithuanian artist Severija Incirauskaite, who darns yarn like no other. Her work involves cross-stitching domestic, metal objects such as pans, watering cans, spoons and even car doors. Integrating traditional elements from her Lithuanian heritage, Severija manages to turn a simple idea into something beautiful. We talked to the artist about how she mixes pop culture with traditional craft and technique.

You've mentioned that you like making something extraordinary out of the ordinary, why is that?  
My work is inspired by everyday surroundings, everyday life. Objects from everyday life in my installations become extraordinary. Utilitarian objects lose their function and become art objects, which tell us different stories about our lives. Personally, I don’t like extraordinary situations - I like everyday life. People often think that a situation like a wedding or exotic travels etc are the most important in their lives. I think the opposite, I think that everyday life is more important because it unites all our lives.
Do you like to place the importance on the banal to highlight the stresses and strains that can build with modern life?
For embroidery I use mass patterns from different women's Hobby magazines. This is a citation of popular culture. I'm trying to break down traditional hierarchies of art, I try to bring art close to people, that's why I use the popular craft techniques in professional art. In some of my works like Between City and Village or Autumn collection, I try to find the intersection points between village and urban culture. Embroidery (and cross stitch) is a characteristic for village and philistine city culture.
Cross-stitching and the subject matter you choose, such as Lithuanian flowers, are fairly traditional. Do you like this nostalgia and reference to simpler times?
I really like simple things. My embroidery is not décor for things. Every time embroidery appears on different objects it tells a different story, transmitting to the viewer a different message.
How do you create embroidery in metal objects such as watering cans and bowls?
I drill holes in the object and then embroider with cotton thread. The embroidery colours chosen are mostly in accordance with the object colour. I don’t use contrasting colours for the embroidery, but try to adapt to the object. I emphasize the importance of the object.
In the Way of Roses series, you cross-stitch car doors and bonnets, is the contrast between mass-production and craft something that appeals to you?
No, it's not just a contrast. This collection was made in 2007, that year my country (Lithuania) was statistically the leader in the number of deadly accidents on the roads. It was a really big problem in our country, so I embroidered real car parts from the crash sites. Our country has a tradition of placing plastic flowers where the accident took place, so embroidered car details are a reference to the plastic flowers standing on the roads in places of deadly accidents. I was a young driver at this time, and it was very important to me.
What is it you enjoy about cross-stitching?
I use many different techniques, but recently more cross-stitch. I like this technique because it helps to express my ideas. Especially when I talk about urban and village cultures, or when I talk about the professional arts and crafts.
Where did you learn to embroider/cross-stitch? Did anyone teach you?
My study was related to textile specialty. I had many good teachers. I am currently also a teacher at the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts Textile Department, and I am director of the textile gallery Artifex (www.artextile.lt).
Many of the objects you use are hand-held, domestic objects. Any plans to embroider anything on a larger scale (other than cars)?
I’ve also embroidered walls with large stitching.
Do you like to embellish your own clothing with needlework?
No, as I have said my embroidery is not a decoration. It is a part of my artwork.
What projects are you working on now?
I’m currently creating objects without use of embroidery. From old metal objects as well, such as buckets, sanitary fittings, washing machines. They are often balancing between art and design.

Gabriel Moreno

Illustrator, engraver and painter based in Madrid, graduated of Fine Arts in the University of Sevilla in 98. Since then he worked in different design studios and ad agencies in Andalusia. In 2004 he moves to Madrid. In June 2007 he begins to show his portfolio and after being selected amongst the 20 new talents of illustration, by the London based magazine Computer Arts, he begins his successful career as an illustrator.

At present he has worked with virtually every major national agencies, and is starting with his first commissions and international expansion. He has worked with numerous national and international publications, last August by the cover of the North American publishing Los Angeles Times Magazine.

His illustrations include one for Nike, Coca Cola, Marlboro and you can also see them in L.A. Times Magazine, Wall Street Journal and Rolling Stone.

Уже нет — она сбылась 4 года назад, когда я стал работать иллюстратором. Теперь я могу просто продолжать рисовать до последнего дня своей жизни. Надеюсь, он наступит лет через двести.
Искусство интересовало тебя с детства?
Когда был маленьким, любил рисовать, но никогда не думал, что это может стать моей профессией. Помню, однажды в старших классах наших родителей вызвали в школу, чтобы показать им, как мы испортили парты. Забавно, но моя мама и другие родители рассматривали картинки и спрашивали, я ли их нарисовал — рисунки им очень понравились. То, что ты переживаешь в детстве, очень мотивирует в дальнейшем. Как проходит твой рабочий день?
В зависимости от проекта я работаю в разных техниках: работаю за компьютером или рисую на бумаге, — но в целом мои трудовые будни проходят одинаково: я приезжаю в студию, надеваю наушники и под музыку или звуки радио безостановочно рисую. Обедаю, не отрываясь от компьютера, чтобы сэкономить время и успеть вернуться домой к детям, пока они не легли спать. Для моей работы очень важно общение с детьми.
Опиши процесс создания иллюстрации.
Рождается задумка, и я начинаю искать подходящие образцы: позу, которая мне нравится, детали, лицо. Использую фотографии, чаще всего собственные снимки, чтобы не связываться с авторскими правами. Всегда использовал портреты своей девушки, друзей, кота. Что бы это ни было, всегда сначала составляю композицию на компьютере, а затем рисую.
Ты ведь рисуешь на бумаге. Сколько времени уходит на одну иллюстрацию?
Три или четыре дня, если работать по утвержденному наброску, хотя это, конечно, очень приблизительно. Все думают, что рисовать руками намного дольше, а на самом деле все наоборот — на отрисовку, например, глаза в «Фотошопе» у меня уйдет гораздо больше времени, чем на рисунок карандашом.
Как бы ты описал свой стиль?
Мой стиль основан на традиционных методах, но имеет современную направленность. Я очень придирчив и внимателен к деталям и всегда стремлюсь добиться максимальной выразительности и в композиции, и в рисунке.
Персонажи на твоих иллюстрациях реальные или вымышленные?
Это самые настоящие люди. Я работаю в реалистичной манере и не могу обойтись без прототипов. Но в самом начале работы я всегда произвожу несколько «пластических операций», чтобы иллюстрация стала лучше, а лица нельзя было узнать.
В чем ты видишь разницу между художником и иллюстратором?
Иллюстратор — это ремесленник, который работает, чтобы в итоге продалась бутылка колы или машина. Перед художником же стоит задача другого порядка — донести послание. Художник создает произведение, в котором есть идея, а не картинку для рекламы крема для лица.
Где проходит граница между коммерческой иллюстрацией и искусством?
Сложно сказать. Возможно спустя 500 лет, когда иллюстрация перестанет быть инструментом продаж, останутся только творческая составляющая и выразительная форма и граница исчезнет.
Какие художники тебя вдохновляют?
Эгон Шиле , Эдвард Мунк , Хоуп Ганглофф , Алекс Трочат и тысячи других. Когда я начинал, я мало знал об истории иллюстрации. Теперь я не представляю, как можно не знать хотя бы несколько имен.
Есть ли сейчас в иллюстрации какая-то мода?
Думаю, что дать ответ на это вопрос невозможно. В наши дни глобализацией и коммуникации связали весь мир воедино. Количество модных направлений и стилей растет по экспоненте, и обобщить этот процесс очень сложно.
В какой стране сейчас лучше всего обстоят дела с иллюстрацией?
В США, и так было всегда. Это центр капитализма и потребительской культуры — центр рекламы, а именно рекламная индустрия создает спрос на иллюстрацию. Реклама позволяет девяноста процентам из нас, иллюстраторов, зарабатывать на жизнь столь прекрасным и любимым делом.
А как обстоят дела с рынком иллюстрации в Испании?
Это неплохой рынок, однако в стране продолжается экономический кризис и денег на проекты не хватает. Раньше рекламные кампании с использованием иллюстраций были популярны. Надеюсь, что добрые времена всё же вернутся.
Расскажи про свою первую коммерческую работу.
Свою первую коммерческую работу я создал в 2007 году для испанской радиостанции RadiOlé, в сотрудничестве с крупным испанским рекламным агентством Shackleton. По времени эта работа совпала с моим первым летом в Нью-Йорке, когда прошел всего лишь месяц как я начал распространять своё портфолио. Мне было уже 34 года (слишком много для начала карьеры в этой индустрии), но получив первый заказ, находясь на Манхеттене, я чувствовал себе так, будто коснулся неба.
У тебя есть любимый клиент?
Нет. Клиенты бывают очень разные, то же относится и к их маркетингу. Но такие крупные заказчики как Nike, Coca-Cola, чаще других, хотя и не всегда, делают очень интересные проекты.

Люблю проекты, минимально ограничивающие творческую свободу. А также те, которые получают широкое освещение в СМИ. Я ведь работаю не для себя, а для того, чтобы мои работы увидели.
Есть проект, о котором ты мечтаешь? Проиллюстрировать, например, книгу, статью, рассказ или идею?
В моей жизни столько вещей, которые я бы хотел увидеть завершенными, что я даже не знаю, с чего начать. Я люблю фильмы — вот, пожалуй, нарисовать для какого-нибудь хорошего фильма я бы хотел. Такого я еще не делал. На самом деле я бы очень хотел поработать над таким проектом, как я описал, отвечая на предыдущий вопрос. Например, создать иллюстрацию, которая заняла бы целый фасад здания на Таймз Сквер.
Что привело тебя в Мадрид?
Счастливая случайность. Я познакомился со своей женой на пляже, она из Мадрида. Так я переехал в центр рекламной промышленности Испании. Привыкнуть было непросто, ведь я приехал из маленького Андалузского городка Баена. Но через какое-то время я почувствовал себя в Мадриде как дома и понял, что это отличное место для жизни. Это огромный город, но он полон хороших людей.
Напечатанные ограниченным тиражом работы популярны в Европе?
Если вы имеете в виду мои старые работы, они действительно хорошо продаются в Европе. Кроме того, меня часто просят отправить что-то в Америку. Ценность ограниченного издания заключается в возможности обладать чем-то, что есть всего у нескольких людей в мире. Еще притягательней оригинал — ведь в этой работе заложена история, даже некая магия.
Как ты считаешь, была ли твоя последняя выставка во Франции успешной?
Выставка открылась всего за несколько дней до рождения моей дочери, поэтому у меня не получилось присутствовать на открытии. Каролин, владелица галереи передала мне, что все прошло очень хорошо и посетителям действительно понравились работы. Многие из них были успешно проданы, поэтому я верю, что выставку можно считать успешной.
Каких посетителей ты бы хотел видеть на выставке?
Абсолютно любых. Творческих личностей и людей, которым просто нравится мои работы. Так же буду рад видеть тех, кому еще не удалось дать моим работам критическую оценку.
Как ты представляешь себе Россию?
В моем представлении это очень холодная страна с душевными людьми, которая пережила великие перемены в последние годы. Страна, бурлящая творческими идеями, которые вот-вот выплеснутся. Страна великих контрастов.
С кем из известных личностей ты бы хотел выпить чашечку кофе?
Со многими: с Алем Пачино, Обамой, Сарой Пэлин...
Есть ли жизнь на Марсе?
Да, там живёт Сара Пэлин. Мне кажется, на Марсе вряд ли, но глупо полагать, что кроме Земли жизни больше нет нигде.
Что бы ты посоветовал начинающим иллюстраторам?
Не верьте тем, кто говорит, что одной иллюстрацией прожить невозможно — это может быть их случай, но не обязательно ваш. Всегда мыслите широко, и будьте самокритичны, иначе ничего не выйдет.
Ты бы перестал рисовать за сто миллионов долларов?
Нет, я бы лучше нарисовал что-то за эти деньги. Так было бы гораздо интересней.

Influence or how dreams come true

A long time ago...
I was a fan of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen :) I watched every single movie, and actually.. I still have copies at my parents house. I have a thick notebook with pictures from different magazines with these two celebrities! I even created a website and was posting there all the new updates, pictures, etc.! I wanted my website to deliver first news! I was also a part of one of the first online communities dedicated for them... It was a time when I was a teenager..

Well, I am still young, and I follow MKAO, but they no longer appear in movies, so I see how influential they became after they stopped being filmed and created their fashion line.
4 years ago they published a book. You cant even imagine how desperately I wanted to have that book! But I was in Klaipeda (Lithuania) and there was no chance I would ever get one...

And now.. I am holding the 'precious' dream in my hands! Dreams Come True! Even after all these years I am still excited, a wonderful book, beautiful and interesting! Yes, dreams come true! Even after years... Even when it is not your top dream anymore, but because some time ago it was a dream you want to make it true. And I am not disappointed!

This 57-year-old film, recently unearthed by GE, might be the most interesting five minutes you spend all day. It predicts our current technology with uncanny prescience. Among the innovations correctly predicted in this film are:

Scott Weaver - Rolling through the Bay

Thirty five years ago I had yet to be born, but artist Scott Weaver had already begun work on this insanely complex kinetic sculpture, Rolling through the Bay, that he continues to modify and expand even today. The elaborate sculpture is comprised of multiple “tours” that move pingpong balls through neighborhoods, historical locations, and iconic symbols of San Francisco, all recreated with a little glue, some toothpicks, and an incredible amount of ingenuity. He admits in the video that there are several toothpick sculptures even larger than his, but none has the unique kinetic components he’s constructed. Via his website Weaver estimates he’s spent over 3,000 hours on the project, and the toothpicks have been sourced from around the world:

I have used different brands of toothpicks depending on what I am building. I also have many friends and family members that collect toothpicks in their travels for me. For example, some of the trees in Golden Gate Park are made from toothpicks from Kenya, Morocco, Spain, West Germany and Italy. The heart inside the Palace of Fine Arts is made out of toothpicks people threw at our wedding.

For a third consecutive year the city of Kaunas, Lithuania approached artist Jolanta Šmidtienė to assist with their annual holiday decorating. Recognizing the city’s somewhat dire financial state the artist challenged herself to build something that wouldn’t rely on any administrative funds set aside for the event. The result: an enormous 13-meter tall Christmas tree made from nearly 40,000 recycled green bottles and zip ties. At night the tree is lit from the inside resulting in a glowing, translucent, emerald green spruce that’s making headlines across the country.

With each successive work, I hope to draw attention to the painterly versus the formal, predominating the medium as integral to the understanding and formation of my work, and referencing painting as both ‘act’ and ‘medium’. Through my treatment of form and content, I ask the viewer to consider the technical aspects of my paintings, but also the metaphorical role that media assumes in my work, and finally the relationship of my paintings to a greater narrative and mythology, in which each subject is related to ideas of psyche and convalescence. As a result, my work often uses personal history to approach universal themes, and a politics that I view as deeply personal, yet resoundingly human.

Spanish designer - Miguel Endara - made a portrait of his father that composed entirely out of 3.2 million ink dots.

He says it is not an advertisement for a pen (Micron).
